40 Years Ago Today – Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five Are First Rap/Hip Hop Artists To Play a Theater (Watch “The Message” Video)

40 years ago today (9/2/76), Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five become the first rap act to play a theater when they do their first major gig, performing at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. Rap and hip hop of course didnt exist much prior, perhaps the closest we’d get to that was Parliament Funkadelic. Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five would go onto introduce various DJ techniques along with rap interplay and choreography that previously hadn’t been seen or heard before. Now of course its hard to find anything as pure as the beats and rhymes put out during this era of old school.Check out the video for Grandmaster’s 1982 hit “The Message”…

  1. There was no such group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 in 1976.
The 3 Emcees got together late 1977 Kidd Creole,Mele Mel and Cowboy.
In 1978 Scorpio Joined the group and Rahiem joined the group June 1979.
So all this information is wrong.
We already corrected that history. And for the record these are NO EMCEES IN 1976..
