50 Years Ago Today – The Band Released Live Album ‘Rock Of Ages’

50 years ago today (8/15/72), The Band released the live album Rock of Ages, compiled from recordings made during their series of shows at the Academy of Music in New York City, from December 28 through December 31, 1971, the album served as their definitive live album until that famous Thanksgiving show from 1976. Of importance on the Rock of Ages album was the addition of horn charts that Robbie Roberston had Allen Toussaint compose for, resulting in eleven songs receiving the horn treatment live. In 2013, Capitol released Live at the Academy of Music 1971: The Rock of Ages Concerts, as both a 2 CD set, and a box set. Check out “King Harvest (Has Surely Come)” with the ever soul-bearing Richard Manuel delivering lead vocals and those horns joining in the action.
