You know him as the funny guy from SNL, The Three Amigos, The Jerk and Planes Trains and Automobiles, but Steve Martin sure knows his way around the banjo. Today that wild and crazy guy and renowned banjoist celebrate his 75th birthday (born 8/14/45) and he very well might have been born grey-haired.
Martin learned to play in the early ’70s with the help of John McEuen, and has since gigged semi-regularly until 2009, when he released his first all-music album, The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album in 2010 and toured with Steep Canyon Rangers over the next few years. Watch Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers perform live at NPR Tiny Desk Concert in 2017..
