Yonder Mountain String Band Bounces Through Portland’s Crystal Ballroom (SHOW RECAP/PHOTOS)

Yonder Mountain String Band played Portland, Oregon’s Crystal Ballroom last Thursday, March 15 as part of their spring tour. Yonder brought along newgrass/Americana string band outfit Old Salt Union to get things warmed up.

Bassist Ben Kaufmann started things off by announcing that they had “the pregnant-est fiddle player in all the land,” to which Allie Kral replied, “I made sure he stayed in for this tour. He’s nice and comfy.” And with that Yonder Mountain String Band started their long set of original songs from their extensive catalog, along with a few covers, such as King Harvest’s “Dancin’ In The Moonlight,” which Yonder included on their newest release, Love. Ain’t Love.

The Portland appearance served as a sort of precursor to July’s Northwest String Summit, hosted by Yonder Mountain String Band for what will be the 17th straight year. “Strummit” features a who’s-who of American string band acts, along with Americana, folk, funk and rock n’ roll acts to help stir things up. The full line-up has recently been announced, and tickets are available at stringsummit.com.
