Dntel: Aimlessness

[rating=3.00]

Dntel is Jimmy Tamborello, a musician who burst most strongly onto collective consciousness through his collaboration with Ben Gibbard, under the moniker The Postal Service. However, under the moniker Dntel Tamborello has been responsible for leading the charge on modern glitchy electronica, first coming to the notice of this reviewer with the fantastic 2003 Kompact compilation, Triple R Friends, to which Tamborello contributed his 2001 song, “This is the Dream,” as remixed by Superpitcher.

He has since made a number of Dntel albums, including the recently-released Aimlessness. As with Life is Full of Possibilities, Aimlessness is a meandering affair; it roams from ambient to glitch to upbeat, never stirring things up so much as to be jarring but similarly not injecting enough new energy to qualify as particularly groundbreaking. Previous fans familiar with Dntel’s style of general musical musings (or those of Aphex Twin) will generally be pleased; this is a good soundtrack for being. Those looking for a more dancy affair will, perhaps, want to wait for the inevitable remixes, which will likely take the solidly downtempo album and move it up. In the meantime, listen for this album in a hip lounge or art gallery near you.
