Smith Lyle & Moore is a new LA-trio comprised of touring musicians Andrew Smith, Tyler Lyle and Jack Moore.
When Jack Moore lost his father Gary – the legendary guitarist of Thin Lizzy – he was left with the strong sense to create. He decided to leave London and join Los Angeles producer/musician Andrew Smith in Los Angeles to collaborate together on a new project. They set up shop in Smith’s Malibu studio to embark on a new journey of positivity, hope and catharsis that would eventually make up the group’s first EP.
On the way to one of the first recording sessions, Moore was feeling unsure of his writing contributions when he passed a billboard mentioning the word “fate.” Suddenly, a melody took root in his mind and the song grew into the anthemic lead single by the same name. Moore recruited his longtime friend Dhani Harrison to join in on some backing vocals for the session and it was the spark that fueled the remainder of the passion project.
Moore elaborates on working with Dhani and the influence he had on the group, “We were both pretty blown away with what he came out with, he had some Indian nuances to his vocals, much like his father and it really galvanized the song in a lot of ways. It felt like full circle working with Dhani given our fathers had done the same, as well as being meaningful in the way that Dhani had often encouraged me to come to Los Angeles for the music, and his manager actually connected Andrew and myself, having organized the session- so thinking back on it there would have been no band at all were it not for him. There were a few similar moments of serendipity that contributed to the bands creation, so it really did feel like destiny in the end.”
The last piece to the puzzle was acclaimed songwriter and musician Tyler Lyle. Smith had been working with Lyle on a few separate projects but when he was introduced into the mix with Moore it became instant musical chemistry. Lyle went on to contribute “Werewolf” and “Hollywood Forever” to round out the group’s inaugural effort.
Today Glide is offering an exclusive early listen to the band’s first collection of songs. Over the course of four songs, it’s immediately clear that this is an album of passion and integrity full of big harmony choruses, earthy arrangements and honest lyrics. The collaborative effort and sharing of musical ideas and identities translates far beyond the music and it is sure to lead the trio on an exciting journey. Bringing together a 60s pop sensibility with a modern indie rock sound, the group experiments with an array of instruments and sound effects to create something that is totally different than other music out there today. It’s easy to hear the influences of acts like Lord Huron and Fleet Foxes on some songs and the more poignant, folk-driven material of Dr. Dog on others. Each song manages to incorporate infectious, anthemic choruses and sweeping group harmonies, and though this band may be just getting started, one can easily picture their sound filling large venues with fans singing along…whenever that is allowed again.
