Coming off the release of their spectacular sophomore album Waiting To Spill, The Backseat Lovers took over Jimmy Kimmel Live for a performance of “Growing/Dying”.The 10-song LP has the band at their best, their new approach to more complex and full arrangements created a fitting backdrop for the band’s poetic songwriting.
Since they independently released their debut EP, Elevator Days, back in 2018, The Backseat Lovers have been on a historic run. Their debut album came the following year, When We Were Friends is as youthful and innocent as the bike that acts as a centerpiece for the album cover. This album introduced the world to the love-struck lyrics backed by expertly structured arrangements and produced their first hit single “Kilby Girl”, which ended up charting. They followed their debut up earlier this year with Waiting to Spill which is ultimately one of the best albums of 2022. Their youthful lust transformed into a melancholy feeling with dark undertones, the single “The Backseat Lovers – Growing/Dying Growing/Dying” sums up this transition in tone beautifully.
Despite their shift in mood, The Backseat Lovers sounded alive during their stop on Kimmel. The low lights provided a nice backdrop for the band’s sporadic approach to live performance. The four-piece tore through “Growing/Dying” with ease, the razor-sharp guitar chords sound even better on stage and the rawness of the vocals add a certain texture that brings a new meaning to the lyrics.
