Coming in like “Love Me Do” era Beatles on ether, Toronto-based Waterfowl’s new single “Open Up”, goes on to display a plethora of past and current pop influences like, Daft Punk and Pond all wrapped up in a warbly psychedelic package. The delivery of deadpan motivational quips disguised as 1984-esque corporate speak is brought to a host of well-used effects and catchy riffs, and a tasteful mid-song guitar solo.
This is our satire on the cult of Big Technology, which promises to free the people only to leave them to serve other masters. We wrote the song amidst the many Big Tech controversies of the past year, and it reflects the increasing disillusionment with the leaders of this industry. The track’s lyrics mimic a call for action, purposely using language that blurs the lines between company mantra and cult dogma. Its modulated guitars and rich harmonies give way to a breakdown full of glitchy textures and samples to create a brooding yet captivating atmosphere.
