Singer and producer Malou Madi is releasing the third and last single ‘What we don’t say” from the EP of the same name. The song dives into the importance of what we don’t say to each other, an exploration of the desire to create a safe space for things to be said, or not said. Its quiet impact offers the possibility of loving the unsaid, letting it exist without the necessity to be pronounced.
Expressive vocals and deep-pocketed, old-school grooves set up a strong foundation for the exciting melodic and harmonic surprises along the way. Created in collaboration with co-producer Josh Hari (a frequent collaborator of Amber Mark, Kadhja Bonet, and Fatoumata Diawara), and Cale Hawkins (Raveena, Arthur Moon), “What we don’t say” is just a preview of what’s to come from the trio in the coming year.
Of writing the track, Madi says, “I wrote this after a long late night conversation with someone who seemed unable to say what seemed to so evidently emanate from her. It felt as if she was not yet ready to hear the words come out of her mouth. I was questioned by her impossible wall, and I wrote this both wanting to say it’s ok not to say what we’re not ready to say, but also to express my deep commitment to being a safe, judgment-free space for people to say what they truly think or feel. We’re all complicated beings, and I’m always drawn to writing about the cracks, the unsure, the ambiguity of our ever-moving minds.”
