LISTEN: Sad Girls Aquatics Club Keep It Fuzzy On Swirling “Who’s Your Witness”

Sad Girls Aquatics Club is a synth-pop duo from Pittsburgh PA consisting of Marie Mashyna and Chelsea Rumbaugh. They met in college and started their first music project together in 2016 called Side Eye. “Who’s Your Witness” comes from their second EP “Easier” which was recorded at a remote cabin in the woods during a snowstorm in the winter of 2020. It’s a tongue-in-cheek send-off to that frustrating situation of a person that you can’t wait to never see again.

Bringing together flourishes of synth-pop with fuzzy, deadpan 90’s delivery, Sad Girls Aquatics Club delivers some low-key shade with their latest single “Who’s Your Witness”. The straight ahead impassive verses give way to a swirling and ornate chorus throughout, creating a surprisingly clever landscape of dynamic peaks and valleys.

“You can literally hear the angst and frustration, via the scream track recorded at the end of this song, as Marie painstakingly ripped out this vocal take at 5:30AM after a full night of Zach fucking around on a guitar solo that we didn’t even use.”
