Waking up from a dream that you don’t understand might leave you trying to grasp at its absurdity before letting it fade into your subconscious, but when it happens to a creative force like Montreal’s Ryan Wayne he decides to weave its threads into a musical tapestry. Opening with moody guitar and dropping quickly into a full band soundscape “Crow Amongst The Sparrows” does exactly that. The Instrumentation immediately takes us there with sparse thick drums, masterfully minimal bass playing, and two guitars dancing sympathetic melodies around each other. Ryan’s voice lends itself to this type of song perfectly; effortlessly smooth but with just enough gravel to know he’s been around, and accompanied in moments of refrain by wispy nymph-like harmonies. Keep an eye out this year for an album by the same name from Ryan Wayne.
“Crow Amongst the Sparrows” came to life out of the remnants of a strange dream. I was wandering the streets, first of Montreal, then Manhattan. Leonard Cohen’s ghost made an appearance as did a beautiful, barefooted waiter. In the morning, I scratched out the fragments onto a napkin in a terrible coffee shop, somewhere in Brampton, Ontario, early morning. The music was paired to these remnants, later, and tried to follow the same confused and mysterious vibe of the dream—like a soundtrack to the dream, I suppose.
