LISTEN: Joe Vann’s Understated Vocals Prove Poetic On Elliot Smith-ish “Sweetheart”

Joe Vann delivers indie folk just the way it’s meant to exist with his gentle lilting track “Sweetheart.” While multiple guitar layers dance around each other the simplistic drums hold a lighty thumping beat accented by what appears to be a very simply played piano for the bass instrument. Vann’s understated vocals deliver the poetic tender lyrics with a welcomed clarity. He Sings, “And now I’m thinking about the way/ You can hold me up against it/ I’ve been wandering all the way/ Back to you sweetheart” in a refrain that ties it all together twice.

“Every million songs or so I decide to throw out all preconceived thoughts and just keep it simple and “dumb”, and it can make another ditty saved in a folder or it can make for something really special. “Sweetheart” was one of those songs that felt great as soon as I heard the scratch track. It came together in just a couple hours and what the song sounds like now is basically what it sounded like that day. It is a song about being unable to focus on anything else but love when you are crushing. It’s a simple song yet when we get out of the way there can be room for layers we didn’t plan on,” says Vann.
