“Weigh Me Down” From Tommy Ashby Is the perfect model of a slow burn epic. With just a touch of gospel organ and a whole lot of O, Brother Where Art Thou energy Ashby brings us a tune that could be the perfect intro or ending to an album that’s worth a repeat either way. The 3:45 runtime goes by in a flash. In a live setting it’d be easy to imagine a crowd of thousands singing along to the refrain “So Weigh me down my love, just weigh me down my love. Put rocks in my shoes, give me something to lose. Just weigh me down my love.” Over and over waiting for an encore. The song is accented with minimalist percussion, root note bass playing, overdriven tremolo heavy guitar and soulful and understated harmony singers. If this is any indication of the quality on Ashby’s new album “Lamplighter” it’s well worth your time to track it down.
