As an incredible year of music slowly comes to a close, the annual GRAMMY awards are right around the corner. Throughout this morning, The Recording Academy announced the nominees for every category including three new awards for Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best Pop Dance Recording. 2023 provided us with hit albums from some of the biggest names in music along with can’t-miss releases from refreshing faces. The Recording Academy voted on albums and songs from around the world with some surprise nominations in almost every category. The 66th GRAMMY Awards will air live on Sunday, February 4 on CBS, and Glide is here to highlight this morning’s nominations.
First up is the General Field section with categories like Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Artists like Jon Batiste, boygenius, Victoria Monét SZA, Lana Del Rey, and Taylor Swift cleaned up these categories with each artist being nominated in all of the General Field categories. Victoria Monét is up all four with a nomination for Best New Artist along with artists like Fred Again…, Noah Kahan, The War and Treaty, Jellyroll, Gracie Abrams, and Ice Spice.
Next is the Rock, Metal, and Alternative section and it is brimming with talent. Boygenius gets another nomination for Best Rock Performance for “Not Strong Enough”, which is the same song up for Record of the Year. Boygenius is in good company with “More Than a Love Song” by Black Pumas, “Rescued” by Foo Fighters, “Sculptures of Anything Goes” by Arctic Monkeys, and “Lux Æterna” by Metallica also up for the award. Foo Fighters are also up for Best Rock Album for their But Here We Are LP along with Starcatcher by Greta Van Fleet, 72 Seasons by Metallica, This Is Why by Paramore, and In Times New Roman… by the iconic Queens Of The Stone Age. Metallica is back again with “72 Seasons” being up for Best Metal Performance along with “Bad Man” by Disturbed, “Phantom of the Opera” by Ghost, “Hive Mind” by Slipknot, and “Jaded” by Spiritbox.
The Gorillaz get their first nomination of the evening for Cracker Island in the Best Alternative Music Album. They’re up against Arctic Monkeys’ The Car, The Record by boygenius, Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd by Lana Del Rey, and I Inside The Old Year Dying by PJ Harvey.
The Hip-hop category is getting some rap giants involved at this year’s GRAMMY awards. The Best Rap Performance is stacked with Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar getting a nomination for their underrated single “The Hillbillies” along with Killer Mike and Black Thought being notable nominees. Killer Mike gets another nomination for Best Rap Album along with Nas, Travis Scott, Metro Boomin, and Drake & 21 Savage.
Jon Batiste is back again for Best Jazz Performance along with Samara Joy and Fred Hersch & Esperanza Spalding. That duo makes an appearance again in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category along with Nicole Zuratis and Patti Austin. The Best Jazz Instrumental album is equally competitive with Kenny Barron’s The Source, Phoenix’s Lakecia Benjamin, Adam Blackstone’s Legacy: The Instrumental Jawn, Billy Childs’s The Winds of Change, and Dream Box by Pat Metheny. The inaugural Best Alternative Jazz Album award has artists like the trio of Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, & Shahzad Ismaily along with Louis Cole, a second trio with Kurt Elling, Charlie Hunter, & SuperBlue. This category is rounded out with Cory Henry Meshell Ndegeocello.
The Country and American Roots field is arguably the most competitive field this year. For Record of the Year, we have “In Your Love” by Tyler Childs, “Buried” by Brandy Clark, “Fast Car” by Luke Combs, “The Last Thing On My Mind” by Dolly Parton, and Chris Stapleton’s “White Horse”. Jon Batiste makes yet another appearance in the Best American Roots Performance category for “Butterfly”. He is joined by The Blind Boys of Alabama’s “Heaven Help Us All”, “Inventing The Wheel” by Madison Cunningham “You Louisiana Man” by Rhiannon Giddens, and “Eve Was Black” by Allison Russell. Best Americana Album is a tough competition with Brandy Clark’s self-titled, Rodney Crowell’s The Chicago Sessions, Rhiannon Giddens’ You’re The One, Weathervanes by Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit, and The Returner by Allison Russell. Glide favorite Billy Strings racked up three nominations this year with Me/And/Dad up for Best Blue Grass Album, his Willie Nelson collaboration “California Sober” is up for Best American Roots Song, and his feature on Dierks Bentley’s “High Note” is nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
The Milk Carton Kids are up for Best Folk Album along with Dom Flemons, Joni Mitchell, Nickel Creek, The Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Simon, and Rufus Wainwright. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram gets his third GRAMMY nomination with his Live in London album going up against Death Wish Blues by Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton, Healing Time by Ruthie Foster, Blood Harmony by Larkin Poe, and Bettye LaVette’s LaVette! are up for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
