SONG PREMIERE: Diane Coll Taps Into Poignant Americana-folk Sound on “This Heart”

Singer-songwriter Diane Coll is originally from Chicago and grew up on a steady, eclectic diet of 70’s AM/FM radio. After dabbling in the Chicago music scene, she eventually wound her way to Georgia in the early 90’s to soak up the thriving music scenes in Athens and Atlanta. It was in Athens that she fronted a trio called Rosary and released the album Clairvoyance. Although life circumstances sidelined her musical endeavors for a number of years, she has a goldfish to thank for reigniting her passion for songwriting in 2017. In tribute, she titled her first solo release Happy Fish and Other Delights in October 2022. It was a pleasant surprise that it received solid airplay on various folk/indie stations and placed nicely in folk charts. This was followed up by a 4-song ukulele-inspired EP called Into the Fire in April, 2023.

Coll currently resides in the Atlanta area, where she works as a mental health therapist. Music has always been her therapy and, as a lifelong music lover, she honors the sacred space between performer and listener. It is a beautiful dance where change is inevitable.

In January 2024, the Atlanta-based folk singer-songwriter is releasing her second album, Old Ghosts, and today Glide is offering a premiere of the standout track “This Heart.” The tune is a simple and catchy work of Americana-folk that finds Coll’s vocals and wisened lyricism on full display. Backed by an acoustic guitar-driven soundtrack that feels warm and reflective, the song eventually gives way to rich harmonies that accentuate its emotional power.

Coll describes the inspiration behind the tune:

This song carries deep meaning for me and is one that I suspect will continue to be a challenge at various times in my life. I made a choice and continue to stake my claim for keeping my heart open. I will not allow my heart to turn to stone from life’s painful experiences. At times, this is sometimes easier said than done, but I like a good challenge. I do hope this song will inspire others to self-reflect and change course if need be.
