LISTEN: Ben Crane Keeps The Folk In Country With Introspective”Shades of Warhol”

Ben Crane is a singer/songwriter based in Brooklyn by way of Southern California. His latest album Spun Honey explores everything from anti-folk to country and Americana roots. A fervent performer, Crane can be seen in venues across NYC and beyond both solo and with his other band, funk/disco army Every Flavor Weather Machine.

Crane pieces together folk tropes with outlaw-style storytelling on his new song “Shades of Warhol”. A harmonica melody adds touches of technicolored whimsy that is more akin to the artist the song is dedicated to than anything else. A gentle swing gives the song an infectious energy while Crane belts out moving poetry. The soft melodies add to the sentimental songwriting, making “Shades of Warhol” an irresistible folk ballad.

  1. Not hearing anything even approaching Antifolk in this song (BTW, it’s not hyphenated, and always capitalised). Nice word play on Kaleidoscope, though.
