This short yet potent single puts you in Singer’s shoes. His perspective is so refreshing, and he communicates it with immense prowess. Much like the songwriting, the nimble guitar work and twangy arrangement keep things simple yet powerful. Sam Singer is a master of making the simple feel complex and powerful. “So, It Is” is a stunning tune that introduces us to young, ambitious songwriting with plenty to get off their chest.
“So, It Is” began with a fateful conversation between Singer and a relative stranger who felt like a kindred spirit even though they’d only met two or perhaps three times before. “I met him at a time of transition for both of us and naturally, when we got to talking, we got to talking about songwriting,” says Singer, a 25-year-old folk artist from Winnipeg’s Garden City neighborhood. “He told me that he always wanted to write songs, but instead, all he usually came up with were titles,” Singer says. “So he had this title, ‘Burn Brightly,’ which stuck with me. I included that phrase in the lyrics for ‘So, It Is’ because I wanted to honor him. With this song, it feels like each line is an ode to somebody I know or knew.”
