Leah Callahan made DIY waves in the Boston music scene as a frontwoman for the bands Turkish Delight US, Betwixt & The Glass Set. Reinventing herself as a solo artist, she has released four albums so far this decade. Curious Tourist was released on April 29, 2024.
Callahan’s waltz-inspired melodies twirl around sliding guitars on “Super.” Fitting a world of influences and a lifetime of experience in a tight pop structure, the veteran songwriter showcases how she has evolved as an artist. She grapples with mortality while stubbornly staying in the present and her words unravel over bouncy tempos and spin a tale of acceptance. Despite the swaying melodies that deliver bright tones, Callahan is able to employ a vague yet potent poetry that anchors the song down to earth. “Super” allows Callahan to get some heavy thoughts off her mind while displaying her diverse vocal range over an energizing arrangement.
“‘Super’ was inspired by the band Blur and The Housemartins, that upbeat, catchy pop that only the British seem to be able to do, with the tongue-in-cheek lyrics,” explains Callahan on the single. “It’s pop but with something mischievous brewing underneath.”
