“This was the first song I wrote for the record. I was jamming around on the drum kit, exploring rhythmic ideas born out of Louisiana rhythm and blues. After adding some melody from a Roland Juno synth and some harmony from a Hammond organ, I started to stumble into some kind of retro-future-arcade-groove trip,” says the versatile Dex Green about his new single “Days Fly By” from his uncompromising album Imaginary War out 6/28 via 3Sirens Music Group.
On Imaginary War, Green wrote every song, played every instrument, and sang lead on all. During this time, he was heavily influenced by visual storytelling and cinema; Alain Resnais’ ’60s French New Wave film Last Year at Marienbad was on a constant loop during the recording process. Sonically, the album draws from his affinity for synth-driven psychedelic pop, jazz, ‘70s rhythm and blues and more, woven together with his inviting atmospheric production. Green is tenacious in his approach to sound, blending shades of Yeasayer’s psych synth statements with Mac Demarco’s modern accessibility.
“Days Fly By” is Green’s commentary on the passage of time, and Glide is premiering the stunning black-and-white video below for this synth banger of a track, one that needs to appear on everyone’s Spotify recommendations that have an ounce of good taste.
“I had such a blast making the music video for ‘Days Fly By’ with the great Hannah Hall at the helm. I love Hannah’s style and ‘lens-side manner’ if you will. Hannah and I sat down at 3Sirens one afternoon to discuss a direction for the video and I told her about some of the creative process used in the making of the record. One key element being that I had the ’60s French New Wave film ‘Last Year at Marienbad’ by Alain Resnais on loop in the background as I wrote and recorded. It kinda seemed like a no-brainer to use the film as a jumping-off point for the video. Hannah cooked up a killer treatment and of course we had to do it in black and white as an homage to the film. I was honored to have some of my close friends join me in the video. There are appearances by Aaron Lee Tasjan, Audley Freed, Jen Gunderman, Heather Gillis, Ray Jacildo, Bob Lewis and Kevin Black and Julia Knight as the lead role,” adds Green=.
