Weirdo Wednesday: Frank Zappa Flaunts Truly Unique Guitar Solo On “Montana” Live 1973

Keeping with the loose LA/So-Cal theme this week, it’s high time (pardon the pun) we paid tribute to the king of weird himself, the late great Frank Zappa. Suffice to say his reputation for weirdness preceded him, as he practically personified the notion to many people, at least musically anyway (he was always super articulate/intelligent/thoughtful when he wasn’t on stage performing batshit avant-garde psychedelic jazz-rock compositions).

However, while Frank’s reputation as a counterculture icon is well established, his guitar skills were always most impressive. A prime example is his absolutely banana guitar solo, which is in the middle section of this performance of the always entertaining “Montana” from 1973. Frank was a one-of-a-kind dude whose eccentricity and innovation are truly missed. Cheers to the king of weird. R.I.P.
