Computer Science is the project of Angie Brozowski of Asheville, NC. Formed in 2018, she has released three EPs and a handful of singles between 2018-2021. After taking a three-year hiatus from the project, Computer Science returns with a 10-track LP, Cleaver. Produced by Lawson Alderson, this piano-driven record combines inspiration from indie, shoegaze, country, and post-rock. It features a number of Asheville musicians, such as Caelan Burris and Jude Corbin of Tombstone Poetry, as well as Eli Whitlow and Ivo Pestana of SENDER. The record also features collaborations with Rob Robinson and Alderson’s new solo project, headringer.”
“Cloud White Cloth” examines Brozowski’s emotionally heavy approach to shoegaze. The artist blends stirring piano melodies with the genre’s lush textures, putting a unique spin on tropes from the genre. They borrow dense guitar textures and combine them with their natural pop sensibilities. Thudding drums surgically penetrate the complex harmonies as Brozowski’s croons deliver infectious melodies. While on the surface, “Cloud White Cloth” comes off as a routine shoegaze tune, the nuances of Brozowski’s approach make this such an unforgettable performance. Their emotions are palpable and add a layer of maturity to the loose arrangement. “Cloud White Cloth” is just one look at Brozowski’s work on Cleaver. The single has the artists flipping shoegaze tropes on their heads to land on this hypnotic sound brimming with searing guitars and neck-breaking drums.
“‘Cloud White Cloth’ is a song I wrote in 2017 while in high school,” explains Brozowski. “This song always carried a lot of emotional meaning for me, and I felt it needed to be redone. This recording is the product of that and remains a favorite of mine from the record.”
