LISTEN: VOV VOV!’s “Dialogue Between Two Silly Thinkers” Is Abstract Indie Rock With Lo-fi Warmth

The VOV VOV! project came to life between March and April 2023 in Florence, founded by three band members: Giulio (drums), Pier Paolo (guitar), and Francesca (vocals and keyboard). Their first tracks emerged from improvisation sessions in the rehearsal room or melodic ideas that evolved through mutual influence.

This workflow remains a defining feature even now, as the band has expanded with the addition of Giovanni (guitar) and Zoe (bass). With the full lineup, VOV VOV! has developed a more cohesive sound and a clear artistic direction, blending the krautrock concept of repetition, easy-listening-inspired melodies, and the dreamy atmospheres typical of shoegaze. The band released their debut EP, Sunbathing in a Magnetic Field, on May 9.

“Dialogue Between Two Silly Thinkers” is an early favorite from VOV VOV!’s tremendous debut EP, and it only begins to touch on the band’s refreshingly warm and off-kilter approach to indie rock. The stand-out track is a breezy, groovy outing with the band employing surf rock-style guitars that slide under the hushed vocals to create a complex warmth. VOV VOV! leaps out of the gate with a statement piece. “Dialogue Between Two Silly Thinkers” lands somewhere between lo-fi bliss and hectic experimentation, creating a broad playing field for the band to showcase their personality. The band takes this opportunity to develop enticing textures that warp as the song continues, helping the tune maintain its loose feel. With the perfect amount of risk and just enough infectiousness, VOV VOV! begins their promising career. “Dialogue Between Two Silly Thinkers” is an abstract portrait of a young band with creative freedom and limitless potential, allowing the band to craft this hypnotic and unforgettable outing.
