BlackLiq is a songwriter, radio host, author, teacher in public and private schools, juvenile detention facilities, and universities, and TEDtalk speaker. He first collaborated with producer Dub Sonata on a 7″ in 2023 before working on their new collaborative album, Much Given, Much Tested. The LP is available now on olive green vinyl through Bandcamp.
The duo team up with the veteran spitter for an anti-social anthem with off-kitler production and venomous verses. “People Person” is a highlight from BlackLiq and Dub Sonata’s freshly released LP and only begins to hint at the duo’s natural chemistry. On “People Person,” BlackLiq and Slug trade verses over subtle jazz, hard-hitting drums, and head-spinning tempos. Sonata’s lofty visions come to life on this track as the production warps around BlackLiq’s passionate vocals and vivid imagery. At its heart, “People Person” is a storytelling tune of autobiographical proportions. Two mysterious figures in the underground Hip-hop scene bring us into their world the only way they know how: imaginative rhyme schemes. “People Person” reaches back into the artist’s past to better understand the present, and BlackLiq does so with passionate gusto. The verses on this song take you on a mysterious journey through rejection and self-acceptance, giving the performance a hidden uplifting nature. With a new album out now, Dub Sonata and BlackLiq solidify their prowess with the Slug-assisted “People Person.” The single from Much Given, Much Tested displays the duo’s combined forces via neck-breaking lyrics and experimental production.
“Slug is a People’s Champ. I can’t imagine what that feels like. The irony that I’ve chosen an art form and a path so deeply rooted in performance and engagement is ironic,” explains the artist. “‘People Person’ captures the contrast, and unlikely similarities between friends who do the same things, in very different ways.”
