With the passing of last week’s summer solstice, it seems like a fitting time to spotlight one of the most delightfully deranged sunbaked bands of all time: Sun City Girls. For those not familiar with the band, they came up in Phoenix’s underground indie scene during the 80s, distinguishing themselves from their other more punky contemporaries with their decidedly more subversive/improvisational/experimental approach to music. That included everything from bizarre spoken-word pieces to jazzy outbursts, often delivered with a distinctive middle-eastern flavor to boot. Over the course of their 26-year career, they produced an astounding 50 albums and 6 full-length videos, the majority of which were delightfully insane in one form or fashion.
