Continuing our salute to the king of summer road-trip anthems, the late great Tom Petty, as mentioned on yesterday’s Manic Monday, the man had no shortage of classic hits throughout his illustrious career. In fact, by the time The Heartbreakers released what was perhaps their most excellent album in 1979’s Damn the Torpedoes, the band were practically already drowning in hit songs that would ultimately become staples on virtually every classic rock radio station across the land. Perhaps the only downside of having a penchant for writing great songs after great songs is that some of them can get lost in the shuffle, kind of like today’s selection, “Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)”. Judging from this fantastic performance, though, it’s fair to say it can hold its own alongside most of Petty’s classic cuts. Just another of his many underrated “highway companions”.
