VIDEO PREMIERE: Hillary Reynolds Reflects on Dark Times with Beautifully Fluid Folk on “Gaslight”

Originally from Appleton, Wisconsin, Reynolds has been living and songwriting in Los Angeles for several years. Her songs have been recorded by Little Big Town (“Next to You”) and Dani Rose (“Got It from My Mama”) and can be heard on hit television series Yellowstone and Loudermilk. Reynolds also curates and hosts house concerts and works with creatives in her hometown on projects to benefit The Trina Fund, which supports women with breast cancer and was established by and named for her mother, who died of breast cancer in 2011.

“I don’t want this album to change your life. I want it to be your companion through it,” says Reynolds of her new album, Changing Seasons—out August 8th. And in a way, it’s been her companion as well. Completed throughout a monumental shift in her life, the Reynolds who began writing the songs of Changing Seasons more than five years ago is not the same Reynolds releasing them to the world in 2025. “It’s wild to think about how the album was written before I became a mother and then finished on the other side of that profound transformation,” Reynolds reflects. “I already felt like a different person on the other side of the pandemic, but motherhood also threw me for a loop.” It was such a change, in fact, that she wasn’t sure she’d ever complete Changing Seasons.

Gradually, Reynolds reintroduced herself to her career. Co-writing sessions for other artists came first—she’d already had songs recorded by Little Big Town and Dani Rose—and then performances. “Eventually,” Reynolds recalls, “there were moments onstage in the Summer of 2023 where I started to get really emotional. There was such a strong resonance.” That was all the proof she needed that she was meant to see this album through. What started as an exploration of songs that felt too personal to pitch to other performers has become something Reynolds needed, and hopes others do, too. The eight songs on Changing Seasons are meant to be a soothing companion to morning routines—something to ease listeners into a new day, to ground you before the chaos sets in.

Today, Glide is offering an exclusive premiere of the video for the standout track “Gaslight.” Musically, the song is an ethereal work of soulful folk with thoughtful lyrics, delicate acoustic instrumentals, and powerful harmonies. Lyrically, the song finds its inspiration from our political climate and uncertainty with a title that is sure to conjure up memories of the 2016 election and all that followed. There is a sort of rolling, fluid energy to the song that is represented and captured in the visuals of flowing water and lonesome landscapes.

Reynolds describes the inspiration behind the song:

“’Gaslight’ was actually written as a result of the 2016 election. I was sitting in a lot of fear and didn’t know where to put it. Some songs feel so consciously, meticulously crafted and this one really came from allowing my subconscious thoughts to unwind. I let my intuition drive the bus and ‘Gaslight’ was created. The melody and lyric describes what it feels like in my body to be gaslit – when the feeling of overwhelm meets hollowness with an unshakable need to call back love over and over and over again even in the darkest of times. I love the way the vocal harmonies weave in and out of each other throughout the entire song… makes it feel like a nod to my earlier choral years where Eric Whitacre was my hero and ‘Water Night’ was my north star.”
