Rounding out our tribute to the late, great Tom Petty this week, while today’s Weirdo Wednesday selection admittedly might seem like an obvious choice, it’s worth revisiting just how brilliant both the song and video for “Don’t Come Around Here No More” actually are. With its ethereal mid-80s synthy psychedelic sound (thanks in large part to the electric sitar), it stands out in The Heartbreakers’ catalog as one of their most unusual and distinctive hits. And the captivating Alice in Wonderland-themed video (which features Petty as the proverbial Mad Hatter), fits the overall trippy and otherworldly vibe of the music perfectly. Petty had plenty of mellow stoner-flavored hits in his day, but he never got more creative and transcendently weird than on this gem. So, kick back, relax, and marinate in this peculiar classic.
