VIDEO PREMIERE: Toad the Wet Sprocket Gives Their Classic Tune “Good Intentions” A Cool Bluegrass Makeover

Given the extensive research and science that go into it, deciding if a song has the potential to be a hit is a debate that artists and labels have been having for decades. Is there a perfect formula that can spark a light inside a listener’s mind, or is it all happenstance, a matter of releasing the right song at the right time? While numbers and graphs can point someone in the right direction, there is almost no way of telling which songs will skyrocket to the top of the charts or when that might even happen.

For Toad the Wet Sprocket, the band found a hit when their song “Good Intentions” found its way on the soundtrack to a new TV show, Friends, in 1995. The show, similarly to a hit song, was a shocking success, and so was “Good Intentions.” The song landed on the band’s 1995 compilation In Light Syrup and has stayed as a live staple for TTWS for over thirty years now, but like any timeless band, TTWS is looking to evolve. Even without the hit, Toad the Wet Sprocket had a string of vibrant hit songs that channelled the alternative nation vibes of the early 90s’ along with a jangly atmosphere that echoed the best of power pop rockers.

Glide is proud to premiere Toad the Wet Sprocket’s latest release, the acoustic version of “Good Intentions,” and its accompanying music video. The stunning reimagining of the mid-’90s classic rejuvenates its words and adds a rootsy glimmer to the rugged vocals. The colors of the lyrics are brighter as they skate across a sleek acoustic arrangement, allowing “Good Intentions” to lean to TTWS’s folksy side compared to the rock undertones of the original.

“A couple years ago, we started including an acoustic set in our live shows, and the suggestion was made to try ‘Good Intentions’ acoustically,” explains bassist/vocalist Dean Dinning. “We first tried it with a similar feel to the way we had been playing it forever, but then, as a joke, we tried playing it with a bluegrass feel and a prominent mandolin part. All of a sudden, it came alive in a way that felt really exciting.”

“When we came off the road last year, we immediately went into the studio with the full band (acoustically) to record ‘Good Intentions’ and as many other songs as we could get in the time we had, ” continues Dinning. “Just like with In Light Syrup in 1995, the song became the cornerstone of a full 16-song all-acoustic album we are very excited to be bringing to our fans in late 2025.”

Along with the refreshing acoustic take on “Good Intentions” and the news of a full acoustic LP from Toad the Wet Sprocket, the band is heading out on a massive tour throughout 2025 with stops all over the States.
