Continuing our spotlight on the late great Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) this week, for today’s Tuesday’s Gone, we’re throwing it back to the very beginning of his eccentric career with this remarkable footage of him and his “magic” band performing live on the beach in Cannes, France, from 1968. The song being performed here is “Sure Nuff N Yes I Do”, which is actually the very first jam on the band’s very first album, Safe As Milk, which came out all the way back in 1967. Although probably the least “weird” album in the Captain’s entire catalog, it is naturally filled with idiosyncrasies even though it’s firmly rooted in the blues at its core. As such, it’s a great introduction for those looking to ease into the delightfully off-kilter world that Beefheart would distinctly forge for himself in the years ahead.
