Rounding out our salute to the late great Frank Zappa this week, for today’s Weirdo Wednesday, we’re taking it back to where it all started with his original band: The Mothers of Invention. While it’s debatable if this performance of “King Kong” live on BBC from 1968 is Zappa’s “weirdest” (in fairness, there’s a lot of competition for that distinction out there), the band does a delightfully entertaining job making that case here. Things start out a little choppy with the band’s jazzy experimental jamming before they officially lock into a wickedly psychedelic groove around the 2:30 mark, at which point it’s all systems go! And it wouldn’t be a classic Zappa clip without some of his characteristically contrarian commentary, which comes courtesy of a 30-second clip at the beginning of the video. Awesome stuff! R.I.P.
