LISTEN: Bland’s “Panacea” Is Jagged Punk With Blazing Melodies

Bland is a post-punk/alternative band from Winnipeg that plays fast and slightly off-kilter, delivering a sound that feels both familiar and entirely their own. Their debut EP, Consumables, was recorded at No Fun Club, engineered by Rob Hill, and mixed and mastered by Donovan Ostopowich. Across five tightly packed tracks, the band leans into jagged guitars, driving rhythms, and vocals that come off somewhere between comedy and collapse. The songs capture the nervy energy of a band that’s hard to pin down but impossible to ignore.

“Panacea” is not only the opener to Bland’s recently released debut EP, but it was also the lead single, doubling down on the sentiment that the tune is inviting everyone into the freshly paved world of Bland. The warm, awkward, singular song is a blast of fresh punk bliss, with chugging guitars that accent crashing drums in the way a fresh bouquet livens a room, minus the grace. What “Panacea” lacks in naturalness, it makes up for in raw, unfiltered prowess that properly introduces Bland’s unique sense of musicianship. The dense wall-of-sound is only broken up by a staggering vocal performance, one that balances sleek melodies with aggressive, spoken-word-style moments that allow Bland’s songwriting to take the spotlight. “Panacea” is just the start of the wonderfully chaotic punk that fills the band’s debut EP, which is available everywhere now.
