LISTEN: The Carousel Employ Dramatic Swells On Cinematic “Closer”

The Carousel is an indie rock group from Des Moines, Iowa. Blending their love of indie rock and classical music, the group released their debut self-titled EP on October 17th. With rich vocals, driving guitars, a thunderous rhythm section, and lush strings throughout, the band creates a musical soundscape that draws you in immediately.

“Closer” is a moody yet lively highlight from The Carousel’s recently released EP. The stand-out performance brings dark post-rock textures to atmospheric, emotional swells driven by distorted bliss and heady melodies. There is a rawness in the vocals that beautifully juxtaposes the soaring arrangement, creating an enticing sonic conflict that rages throughout “Closer.” This battle reaches explosive peaks, only to be dragged back down to more subdued terrain, almost as if the tune was structured around a rolling wave. This allows every element of “Closer” to bask in the blinding light of the listener’s attention, creating an instant, palpable connection between The Carousel and the audience. With a fresh debut available everywhere, The Carousel emerges as an exhilarating addition to modern post-rock, and “Closer” is only the surface of the individuality this band contains.

“‘Closer’ is the final track off our EP, and we all feel we saved the best for last. Musically, I love the strings that dance in and out of the song. Tracking them was my favorite part of this record,” explains the band. “‘Closer’ is about the distance I’ve always felt in my personal life to different elements of the religion I was brought up in. I’ve always felt that I was striving for a feeling that others had but never felt for myself, and this song expresses those doubts and the subsequent emotions they cause.”
