Found-sound pioneers the Books will embark on a North American tour this fall and tease audiences early through the summer with select festival dates across the country in support of their upcoming release, The Way Out. It’s on tours such as these that Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong collect the thousands of long-lost audio recordings that they splice with acoustic and electric instruments as well as their own vocals to create the distinctly delicate pop arrangements that populate their work.
A live performance by the Books is an audio-visual display that eludes comparison, incorporating live vocals, keyboards, percussive elements and instrumental samples. Simultaneously, background visuals succinctly encapsulate the mood of the music; at times the video could be a sub-oceanic panorama, at others a literal interpretation of the lyrics or a more nebulous reference to geometry or numerology. For the first time, the duo will become a trio with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Gene Back joining the band on the road. The band is thrilled and excited to be a part the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival, All Tomorrow’s Parties in NY and a special free performance at Chicago’s Frank Gehry-designed Millennium Park as part of the Downtown Sound: New Music Mondays program.
The twine that binds these elements is the spatial and tonal understanding shared by Zammuto and de Jong. Theirs is a relationship of meditative reciprocity, their skill and dedication to the craft evidenced in the ebb and flow of each live performance.
The Way Out will be domestically released on July 20th on Temporary Residence Ltd.
