40 years ago today (5/5/81), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released its fourth studio LP Hard Promises. This hard-punching and the colorful album is most noteworthy for the appearance of Stevie Nicks on backing vocals on “Insider” and “You Can Still Change Your Mind.” The big hit on Hard Promises is “The Waiting,” which peaked at #19 and the rest of the Heartbreakers utilize their instrumentation to the fullest including Benmont Tench on keys.
