VIDEO PREMIERE: Leftover Salmon Colorfully Takes On Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”

Leftover Salmon has been doin’ their thang for longer than most anybody named Strings, Yonder, or Infamous. Yet in fact, throughout all their eras, the musically colorful Colorado band has been at the helm of the burgeoning “jam grass” scene, leaving in their wake a legacy of legendary live shows and a genre-defying sound.

On May 7th, Leftover Salmon released Brand New Good Old Days, their first release on Nashville indie label Compass Records since Live in 2002. Primarily recorded in late 2019 while on tour in Asheville, North Carolina, the group was inspired by the relaxed and down-home vibe of Echo Mountain studios, which had been converted from an old church and is rife with unique characteristics such as an array of intricate stained-glass windows that had a definite impact on these sessions. However, the big surprise on the release is a crafty and poignant cover of Soundgarden’s 1994 mega-hit “Black Hole Sun.”

Shot during the Brand New Good Old Days sessions at Echo Mountain, Asheville, NC, Glide is premiering the video for this cut, where we can a candid look into the recording process of the spectral Chris Cornell written track. Video credit goes to “Longfellow Films” who bring the band’s easy-going music-making magic to the camera.

“It took us a little time to get everyone comfortable with the tune, but I had made a pretty good chart beforehand that had all of the melodic keyboard lines, the form and chords, etc. After a rehearsal take or two, we dove right in! The ultra-distorted slide solo over the middle section was played by Drew on his electric mandolin, the Bobcat. He and Mario (the engineer) had a great time cranking things up to 11 to get that sound, ” says bass player/producer Greg Garrison.

“I found the bear head downstairs in the studio workshop area, and just put it on to get a laugh out of folks. I always love the reaction you get when you just kind of subtly hang out as if all is normal with something like that…It was obviously passed around for the rest of the night.”
