“I was inspired by a line I heard agent Dale Cooper say as he lay on his hotel floor with a bullet in his gut. He was revealing to his tape recorder, intended for Diane, that all things considered, it isn’t too bad as long as you keep the fear from mind. I’ve applied this to a lot of situations. And I applied it to a melody,” says Dana Buoy about his hazy and lush new track “Fear From Mind.”
Known to some still by his birth name Dana Janssen, the longtime Akron/Family drummer has been challenging the expectations of electronic psych by involving a flourishing creative streak that runs the spectrum from R&B, avant-garde ,and indie pop. In a perfect musical world, Buoy would be selling out theaters and would be next to names like Toro y Moi and Animal Collective on festival bills. With a new record Experiments in Plant Based Music Vol 1 out on November 4 via Everloving Records, Buoy is setting a new standard for his charismatic style of tunes that are edgy yet audibly magnetic.
Janssen’s two previous albums as Dana Buoy have featured unapologetic pop songs informed by R&B and electronica without the compromise that band life entailed. But he had no drums before. These songs are different not only because of their botanical genesis but because actual drums prompted Janssen to play outside of a strict rhythmic grid and to recruit outside collaborators.
Glide is premiering the spacious “Fear From Mind” single and video (below) that was filmed on the Oregon coast at Short Sands and Hug Point. The natural vibes here drop a radiant with an earthy psychedelic feel that serves as a listening companion for a more gracious reality.
“It’s kind of a documentary, written from foggy memory, of an acid trip I had in some deep nature, where the mantra of this song would have been very helpful,” adds Buoy.
