LISTEN: Dillon Currie Creates Prairie Portrait Canadian Folk On “In My Town”

On “In My Town”, Canadian artist Dillon Currie brings a fresh perspective to the always complex story of returning to your hometown. Backed by rich instrumentation that builds as Currie arrives at his introspective peak, the song questions the rose-colored glasses that one needs to take off sometimes in order to truly empathize with those that may have been struggling in plain sight all along. Dillion Currie’s debut solo record is set for release in early 2023.

“I grew up in a small Canadian prairie town called Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. Maple Creek is a town of about 2500 people and is located at the base of the unbelievable oasis that is the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park—a giant, forested plateau which is home to a number of plant and animals species, deep valleys, and incredible views across the vast, quilted prairies below. At the peak of Cypress Hills, you find yourself standing at the highest point of land in Saskatchewan, and from there you can not only see my hometown, but also the breathtaking expanse of land beyond.

From this unique vantage point, everything IS beautiful. As a boy, in this place, I was fortunate to grow up in an environment of love and support. I felt like I was always standing at the top of the hill, and that’s because I was. ‘In My Town’ addresses this privilege and attempts to capture the blissfully naïve perspective I had then about the world around me—that my experience in this place I called home was everyone’s experience.”
