In 2020 Mariah Carey released her memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey”, which introduced the world to a more honest side of one of the biggest pop stars the world has ever seen. One of the most enticing secrets revealed in her book comes out of the recording sessions for her 1995 album Daydream. Carey writes about the secret album recorded during these sessions, a full-length grunge LP with Carey as the lead vocalist.
This album, according to the book, was created as a stress relief for the singer. She points out that the album helped her get out of a dark time and relieve some of the pressure that came with being a rising star in the mid-90s. Carey and her band would turn to this grunge record when the stress of recording Daydream became overwhelming, they would work with distorted guitars in order to refresh their creativity.
While the original album with Mariah Carey on lead vocals was never released, the album did come out. The label was dissatisfied with Carey on the vocals and feared the reception to the sudden change in her sound would alienate certain markets. Sony, who Carey was signed to at the time, instead gave the record to the band Chick who re-recorded the vocals. Someone’s Ugly Daughter, the Chick version of the album, was released on September 5, 1995, to little critical reception, the label soon lost interest and the album fell through the cracks of history.
With the world being shocked by the news that Carey had a secret role in this album, she plans on reissuing her version of the album. No news on a release date is known but Carey has confirmed that the original version of the album is being remastered and is planned for a worldwide release soon.
