The meteoric rise of the multifaceted Steve Lacy has turned the young artist into one of the most exciting acts in modern music. His single “Bad Habits” has broken into the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on multiple charts for multiple genres. The blazing single is from Lacy’s latest album Gemini Rights which was released in July of this year. The 10-song album features some of Lacy’s best music to date while bouncing between emotional ballads and off-kilter rock. The artist continues to ride the waves created by the critical and commercial success of his LP by taking the massive single “Bad Habits” and an underappreciated B-side in “Helmet” to the Saturday Night Live stage last night (November 5).
Lacy took full advantage of his TV time and put together two impressive performances that show he’s ready to sell out stadiums. For his performance of “Bad Habit”, Lacy was backed by a small band including a drummer and bassist, everyone in matching outfits. The same logo that is featured on the artwork for Gemini Rights was illuminated overhead while Lacy paraded around in leather pants and futuristic sunglasses. Towards the end of the song Lacy ditches his guitar and belts out some gorgeous melodies while the band continues the left-field instrumental.
Considering Lacy started his career by recording into his iPhone, the artist never needs anything extra to create unforgettable moments. For his performance of “Helmet”, the bass player switched over to a keyboard to provide the wonky keys we hear on the album. Being one of the more overlooked songs on the album, Lacy brought the indie rock anthem to life with his raw vocals and incredible sense of tone.
