After a quick run of dates supporting labelmate Amigo The Devil, Atlanta rock four-piece Brother Hawk are gearing up to release their upcoming new album The Dreamer, which will surface on March 31st through Liars Club.

The Dreamer was recorded with producer Tom Tapley (Blackberry Smoke, Mastodon) at West End Sound in Atlanta, GA and channels all of the band’s unique influences into one complex tapestry of raging Southern blues-rock riffs, epic-sounding organ, and soulful vocals that give you goose-bumps.

“My father Joe passed away in July of 2017. He was my best friend, and he was in the band as well. He played harmonica on all of our releases and played shows with us all around the southeast. He was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in February of 2017. The songs on the record are about my life since then, the impact that his passing had on me, my brother, and my mother, as well as my relationships with them. I see it as a love letter to my family in a way,” says Brother Hawk guitarist/singer JB Brisendine.

At its core Brother Hawk is a family. Sitting at the head of the table is guitarist/singer JB Brisendine with his right-hand keyboardist/singer Nick Johns-Cooper beside him. The two met in elementary school, bonding over music and becoming lifelong friends ever since. Bassist James Fedigan joined the Brother Hawk family after playing with Brisendine in hardcore bands, forming a friendship and musical bond. Brother Hawk started as a way for the members to play without musical limitations, no preconceived genre, and just let the music channel through them like a vessel. Brother Hawk burst onto the scene with their debut EP Love Songs, which drew critical acclaim for their brand of Southern blues-rock with raging riffs and huge hooks. Playing shows with fellow Atlanta outfit Blackberry Smoke helped them earn a devoted core following, as they continued to win over massive audiences playing Atlanta’s infamous Tabernacle and Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium.

Today Glide is excited to premiere the standout tune “Safe Passage,” which sees the band finding solace in music as they deal with heartache and grief. The song is an ode and tribute to Brother Hawk’s Joseph Brisendine, who passed away in 2017 and who the band’s new album is titled after. Musically, the song reflects that mood with its stark soundscapes of the West and eerie harmonica introduction. This is followed by what can only be described as an epic build-up to the powerful lyrics and vocals that ensure. The song brings to mind the desert folklore of artists like Israel Nash, but Brother Hawk changes things up by adding more of an expansive rock sound intertwined with a sort of cosmic blues that hits your soul in all the right ways. The song moves along in a slithering fashion that is both dramatic and emotional, not to mention downright cool. It culminates in an absolutely ripping guitar solo that allows the song to ascend to a higher plane and close out in proper rock and roll fashion.

JB Brisendine describes the inspiration behind the tune:

“The song is about trying to find myself and my way out of depression after my father passed. This is a really special song for me because it’s the first time I’m handling harmonica duties on a song instead of my dad. I know he’d shit if he heard it and it makes me smile so big every time I think of that.”
