Happy 50th birthday to Andre 3000 (born 5/27/75). Best known as one half of the iconic duo OutKast, alongside Big Boi, he brought an adventurous spirit to Southern rap in the 1990s and early 2000s, helping reshape the genre’s possibilities in terms of sound, image, and subject matter. Yet his recent solo work has been some of the most heady work from a hip-hop artist in recent years. He also played a convincing Jimi Hendrix in the biographical film Jimi: All Is By My Side.
Watch Andre perform live on The Tonight show for perhaps the longest song title ever played in front of Stephen Colbert – “That Night In Hawaii When I Turned Into A Panther And Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn’t Control … Sh*t Was Wild” from his latest album, New Blue Sun.
