Rounding out our tribute to Turnstile this week, although the band has not lost any of their distinctively unhinged energy over the years (as evidenced by our Manic Monday and Tuesday’s Gone selections), their sound has nonetheless continued to evolve in a subtly more experimental direction. Technically speaking, this is nothing new, as the band began incorporating more melodic alt-rock dynamics into their sound as early as 2015, on their excellent full-length debut, Nonstop Feeling. They continued to lean in that direction on their 2018 follow-up, Time & Space. Still, it wasn’t until their breakout 2021 album, Glow On, that everything really came together and the melodic hardcore fusion tip was solidified. But judging by some of their new videos from their forthcoming album Never Enough (which drops this Friday), it seems Turnstile isn’t finished evolving their sound, as evidenced by the markedly more chill (dare I say ambient) flavors that characterize their new material.
Case in point, check out the new video for “Look Out for Me”, which starts out in Turnstile’s typically adrenaline-fueled fashion for the first 3 minutes, before transcending into full Zen mode for the final 4-minute tripped-out ambient-electro outro. The OG hardcore fans may scoff, but this writer for one, is highly intrigued. Dig it:
