Tuxis Giant formed in 2015, when frontperson Matt O’Connor (they/them) holed up in a Vermont cabin to record the band’s self-titled debut. In the 10 years since, Tuxis Giant has evolved into an ever-changing beast, welcoming a rotating cast of bandmates from Boston’s DIY music scene. And while the sound has expanded from Here Comes the Wolf’s melodrama to the road-tested Americana of You Won’t Remember This, O’Connor’s songwriting has only refined. They write with a subtle brilliance, illustrating vivid, emotionally complex scenes with enviable economy. Tuxis Giant’s newest album, You Won’t Remember This, arrives August 15th via Worry Bead Records.
On the latest single from their upcoming release, Tuxis Giant balances emotional vulnerability with artistic growth. “Days” is a moving piece of indie rock with a slight twang, jazzy swing, and distant vocals carrying the weight of the poetic songwriting. Lyrically, there is a beautiful simplicity. While O’Connor keeps the lyrics vague yet potent, the nuances of “Days” are where the magic of Tuxis Giant really shines. The vocals sit behind the arrangement, almost as if trying to hide as they pour their heart out over an equally quaint yet touching arrangement. The instrumentation of “Days” lands somewhere between modern country and artsy rock. With sparse guitars that add a subtle, rootsy atmosphere and drums that evoke the spirit of jazz, Tuxis Giant takes these elements and melts them into an indie rock mold to create a sprawling sonic world that maintains a welcoming warmth. The band’s new album is shaping up to be a landmark release, and the heartfelt poetry of “Days” only heightens the excitement for You Won’t Remember This.
“This is our favorite song to play live. It’s an ode to the endless, ouroboric cycle of work-and-play. It was, in part, inspired by Hayao Miyazaki—one of my favorite filmmakers. I often turn to his movies for comfort and escape,” explains O’Connor when asked about the new single. “The magic in his work only seems possible through his Spartan and uncompromising work ethic. I try to emulate that when I can, but I’m a bum by comparison.”
