Golden Age Thursday: Amebix Usher In Crust Punk Era During Hypnotically Raw Performance In Ljubljana

Like any long-standing music genre, punk rock was destined to evolve, just as it had from the generation before it. Punk, thanks to its DIY ethos, egoless contributors, and tireless thirst for something new they can call their own, has evolved more quickly than other genres, branching into intricate subgenres that highlight different nuances of the art form. The origins of these branches of punk are sometimes easier to trace than others, such as the U.K. punk rockers Amebix, who are widely credited as one of the forbears of crust punk, an aggressive subgenre with the heaviness of metal and the attitude of anarcho-punk.

Formed by the only two consistent members of Amebix, vocalist and bassist Rob “The Baron” Miller, and guitarist Chris “Stig” Miller, the band recorded four studio albums, with the final LP arriving in 2011 during a brief reunion. The band’s impact would prove global after their humble start in Tavistock, and their legacy as crust punk ringleaders has been cemented through performances such as the one we have for this Golden Age Thursday. The marriage of metal and punk is clear in this footage, captured by Marjan Suhi, as the band tears through an aggressive performance in Ljubljana.
