Sleepy Pearls are led by Violette Williams and Brendan Michie, both of whom have a deep appreciation for the bygone era of dreamy doo-wop, coastal-folk, and sock-hop-pop of the Fifties and Sixties. The two initially met during 2020 in San Diego, CA, and began traveling up and down the California coast for inspiration. Several years of writing and recording later, they have expanded to a full band and have been hard at work in the studio with the addition of member Sophie Bell and producer David Glasebrook.
On their latest single, “I Think That’s Fair,” the band urges the listener to join them on a blissful walk through self-analysis and warm textures. There is a reassuring, bubbly warmth to this song that wraps around the listener, letting us know everything will work out, even if the finish line feels light-years away. The wistful vocals perform a meditative slow dance with the sun-drenched arrangement, emulating a deep love, the same love that is being questioned in the lyrics. Despite the romantic, dream-like atmosphere of “I Think That’s Fair,” Williams poetically details a heartbreak cloaked in the bright hues of the guitar melodies. The lyrics of Sleepy Pearls’s new single paint vivid images of longing for idealistic love, a modern love story told through nostalgic melodies. “I Think That’s Fair” introduces Sleepy Pearls as empathetic songwriters with a natural, infectious nature that manifests in psychedelia with a hint of familiarity.
“Brendan and I started writing the guitar and melody in 2021, which sat around for a while as just hums and gibberish until I went through a disappointing experience when it came to love, and that became the inspiration for finishing the song,” explains Williams. “The lyrics came out lighthearted and a bit cheeky, but underneath them was a quiet dream for the kind of partner I’d hoped to meet one day. Funny enough, the song ended up describing little details that very much fit the man I would later meet and marry.”
