Picture Show: Camp Bisco Ten

The biggest Camp Bisco yet took place at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY on July 7 – 9. For the tenth installment of the fest, organizers supplemented headlining sets by the Disco Biscuits with an electronica-heavy lineup that also dipped its toes in the rap, rock and indie worlds.

While unfortunately a series of “technical difficulties” prevented us from giving this fest the full coverage it deserved, we do have a killer photo set from Saturday’s action provided by Sebastien Barre that paints a picture of how things went down at the ILCC featuring the likes of the event’s host – the Disco Biscuits, rapper Wiz Khalifa, DJs MartyParty, Jillionaire and Bassnectar as well as Death From Above 1979, Lettuce, Yeasayer and Neon Indian.

B List: 10 Bands That Should Go Unplugged

[Originally Published: April 14, 2011]

Back in 1989, when MTV was still living up to its Music Television title, the cable network debuted a show with a simple premise called Unplugged. Artists from a wide variety of genres would perform acoustic sets in front of a small audience. By 1992 the show had produced a #1 single (Mariah Carey’s I’ll Be There) and a #1 album (Eric Clapton’s Unplugged) and dozens of memorable performances.

MTV’s Unplugged is currently in its 21st season with Lykke Li, Train and Adam Lambert among the latest batch of underwhelming performers visiting the show. It’s been quite some time since an episode of Unplugged has generated lots of buzz and we’d like to see that change. For this week’s B List, I’ve put together a list of ten acts I think would kill on Unplugged…

10. Fleet Foxes

While appearing on Unplugged wouldn’t exactly take Fleet Foxes out of their comfort zone since frontman Robin Pecknold usually plays an acoustic, we would love the whole band eschew electricity for a set of pastoral folk-rock.

moe. @ Stone Pony Summer Stage – July 15

The five guys named moe. gave the staple Not Coming Down > Wormwood as their opening offering to Asbury Park with bassist Rob Derhak’s signature slapping and dual lead guitarists Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey’s heavy metal shreddings. The New York-based rockers got right down to it and tightly made their way into a very patient, yet spacey segue filled with several teases that marked the transition into one of Schnier’s newer songs, Downward Facing Dog. Schnier then sat down at his Wurlitzer piano for the intro to a prime version of Garvey’s Wind It Up, which then saw, the human metronome, drummer Vinnie Amico, drop the band right into Timmy Tucker. With strong soloing from both guitarists and high-speed mallet-katting (electric xylophone) from percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Jim Loughlin, the band closed the first set nicely leaving the Asbury crowd wanting more.

Garvey’s melodic Hi & Lo opened the second set, which usually signifies that good things are yet to come as was the case at the Stone Pony Outdoor Stage. The jamming  segue out of Hi & Lo saw the band throw down some major Brent Black teases right before Schnier’s major riffs barreled into a solid version of Big World. This take was sans the big finish at the end, but rather featured another on-point drop into the instrumental Ricky Marten. Next, there was no more teasing about it, Brent Black had arrived and again the Jersey crowd saw the quintet firing on all cylinders, with exceptional work from all members of the band. During Derhak’s bass solo he even scatted along with his bass as he added a little Peter Gunn Theme from the ’70s tv show at which point Garvey used his Talkbox to scat very briefly (video).

Schnier then debuted a new one of a kind 1974 double-neck Gibson he recently added to his extensive arsenal of guitars. Giving a slightly different tone and being able to switch tuning and keys, the band closed the set with the newer rocking anthem Haze that went into the always crowd pleasing Rebubula.

4 Knots Festival: The Black Angels, Titus Andronicus, Davila 666: South Street Seaport, NY, NY 7/16/11

The Village Voice has annually crafted one of New York City’s premier summer concerts with their Siren Festival.  Last year marked the 10th and final installment of that gathering though as the downtown free paper turned over a new leaf and started advertising their new 4 Knots Festival this summer.  The obvious change was that no longer would the show take place out in Coney Island but downtown in the South Street Seaport.
