20 Years Ago Today – Bruce Springsteen Premiers Controversial Police Shooting Song “American Skin (41 Shots)” in Atlanta

In connection to recent news involving the unjust death of George Floyd, 20 years ago today (6/4/00), Bruce Springsteen premiered his original song “American Skin (41 Shots)” with the E-Street Band in Atlanta’s Phillips Arena. The song was inspired by the police shooting death of a 23-year-old Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo who was mistaken for a rape suspect. The song would later appear on the Live in New York City live album that documented the Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band’s reunion tour before releasing a new studio version of the song, recorded in 2013, on his 2014 album, High Hopes. Check out the live version…
