Before Eamon McLoughlin of The Greencards ripped into the Grammy nominated instrumental “Mucky the Duck,” from their latest album, Viridian, the polite Brit decided to tell a story of the band’s experiences at the ceremonies in Los Angeles. He confessed to the crowd that, although originally not really expecting to win, and having lukewarm feelings toward the affair, that he became surprisingly upset when he found out that his band had not won. “Moment of rage,” McLoughlin sarcastically joked.
No, The Greencards are not Grammy winners. But they sure do put on a hell of a live show. And that’s no surprise, considering they tour around 225 days of the year, with each show being a breeze for the talented trio, which consists of McLoughlin on fiddle, Kym Warner on mandolin and vocals, and Carol Young on bass and vocals.
It’s the simple things that make a Greencards’ show special: gratifying harmonies, stunning solos, and clear vocals. All were on display for this two-set performance on songs like “The Ghost of Who We Were,” “Life’s a Freeway,” “Who Knows,” and “Here You Are.” Young was particularly impressive on vocals throughout the show; with a stage presence that’s always focused, she’s got a way of delivering each song without ever going through the motions.
But that’s pretty much The Greencards for you – always full speed ahead. Even a Grammy snub can’t slow them down.
