With the buzz following their debut EP, 2006’s A Lesson In Crime, Ontario’s Tokyo Police Club debut full length Elephant Shell seems long overdue. These young Canadian dudes aren’t the most original thing going, but perhaps chiming in at just 28 minutes long, that’s unique enough a statement get short attention spanned listeners on board.
Like any band formed just three years ago, there’s lost of room to nit-pick, such as a majority of the songs sounding the same. Singer-bassist David Monks sounds a bit like Colin Meloy of the Decemberists voice wise, while his poetic yearnings are still a few albums short of his literal leaning peers. Tokyo Police Club has nailed the atmospheric dynamics, ringing guitars and emo sentiments confidently, but they are still way away from making serious dents in critic’s ears. Good thing they have a cool band name.
