Scottish Hip-Hop Act Young Fathers Win Mercury Prize, Beating out Damon Albarn, FKA Twigs

Scottish hip-hop band Young Fathers have won the 2014 Barclaycard Mercury Prize for its debut full length Dead. This was clearly considered an unexpected win for the annual award given out for the best album from a British artist. The band beat out  several favored nominees—Blur frontman Damon Albarn, critical darling Bombay Bicycle Club and the much-buzzed-about FKA twigs.  On November 2, Dead entered the official top 100 UK album chart for the first time, four days after their Mercury success, debuting at 35.
